Good Afternoon Cougars! It is hard to believe that in 16 hours we officially kick off the 2021-22 school year. The staff is excited to see all of the smiling faces tomorrow morning. Per our current COVID-19 plan, masks for students and staff are optional. We will respect the decision your family makes to either wear a mask or not and ask that you do the same for fellow students and staff. As a reminder, the school doors open at 7:55 with breakfast (free) served until 8:10. K-5 students will report directly to their classrooms upon arriving at school. 6th-12th grade students can grab breakfast and head to the gym. The middle and high school will have a brief assembly and then head to their assigned teacher from the assembly for schedules and short class meeting. The school day ends at 3:11. We ask that all parents and others picking students up wait outside at the end of the day. Also, our girls volleyball teams will host Stephenson beginning at 6:00. Come on out and support the Cougars! We are looking forward to an exciting year. As always, if you have any questions, please reach out. Sincerely, Bill Valima Superintendent/6-12 Principal
Change of Meeting Notice. The July Regular Board of Education Meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 26th in the Superior Central Library.
Update - July 14, 2021 Dear Superior Central Staff, Students, and Community, I hope you have enjoyed your summer so far and have been able to spend time with family and friends. Over the last several weeks, we have been busy assessing the start of the 2021-2022 school year. Earlier today, I met with Superintendents from Alger and Marquette Counties, along with officials from the LMAS County Health Department and the Marquette County Health Department. During this meeting, we reviewed the current recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services as they pertain to K-12 students and COVID-19. As long as the current recommendations from those agencies remain the same, the following procedures will be in place at Superior Central Schools for the 2021-2022 school year: • Based on current community transmission of COVID-19, masks will be recommended but will not be required. We will respect the decision your family makes to either wear a mask or not and ask that you do the same for fellow students and staff. • We will not require our students or staff to be vaccinated as a condition to attend our school or participate in sports or after school extracurricular activities. • If a student or staff member contracts COVID-19, we will require this person to abide by the direction of their physician and the Health Department. We will continue: • With our hand sanitizing stations on busses and in the hallways. • With our policy of staying home if you are sick. • Ensuring that our building is cleaned and sanitized. • With encouraging healthy habits like handwashing and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze. • With our use of outdoor learning spaces if applicable. • Offering live streaming of all our sporting and concert events for those unable to attend. We have made the decision that the Superior Central Online Academy will no longer be available to our students. While some students flourish in a virtual setting, we found that most do not. In addition, several services that we provide can only happen in a face-to-face setting. We strongly feel in-person instruction is much more beneficial than any online program. Thank you for your support and cooperation as we continue to navigate through this challenging time in history. The safety of students and staff remains a top priority. We are hopeful for a great school year and we are looking forward to seeing students fill our classrooms once again. Sincerely, Bill Valima Superintendent/6-12 Principal
Good Afternoon Cougars! With the school year wrapping up we need you to do a us a favor. Check around your house, backpack, car, couch cushions, etc... for library books. We still have a bunch of library books out and we need them back. Thanks!
Dear SC Community, As you may have seen, the Marquette County Health Department has reduced the number of days of quarantine back to 10 days. This morning we met with the LMAS Heath Department. LMAS is keeping the 14 day quarantine. As we fall under the jurisdiction of LMAS, students who have to quarantine at SC will continue to quarantine for 14 days. If you live in Marquette County and attend Superior Central, LMAS said you still have to follow the 14 day quarantine period. If you have further questions please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Bill Valima
Dear Superior Central Community, As you may have heard, today Governor Whitmer recommended that all high schools in Michigan take a two-week pause of in person learning. She also asked the same for athletics. The superintendents of Marquette and Alger Counties along with the local health departments and medical directors met this afternoon and made the decision to continue in person learning as we have all year. For Superior Central, this decision is based on numbers. We currently have 3 active cases at Superior Central, less than 1% of our total population (student and staff). This week we tested 42 student athletes for COVID-19; all tests were negative. We have been fortunate at Superior Central all year with our COVID-19 numbers. I attribute this to our students and parents. Students have been great with mask wearing and hand washing/sanitizing. Parents have kept kids home when they are sick and have immediately contacted the school if a student tested positive. In every case we have had this year, the parent has called the school before the health department. This has enabled us to immediately contact trace and quarantine exposed students. I know we are all tired of this virus. I ask that we all continue to do our best to stay healthy. Wear a mask when you are in the building, wash your hands, stay home if you are sick. As always if you have any questions please contact me. Sincerely, Bill Valima Superintendent/K-12 Principal

Because of the time sensitivity, the second dose is being administered tomorrow, Friday, February 12th. To accommodate the large number of staff receiving a second dose, we will be conducting a half-day on Friday, February 12th. School will dismiss at 12:30 on Friday, February 12th. The 2nd grade will return on Tuesday, December 1st. Good Evening Superior Central Community, We were informed tonight of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis in the elementary school. After discussion with the LMAS Health Department, we have made the decision to close school on Wednesday, November 17th for all Kindergarten through 8th grade students to conduct contact tracing (9th through 12th grade is already closed per the MDHHS order). Once we have completed our contract tracing, we will make a decision regarding reopening on Thursday. I thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this. Sincerely, Bill Valima Superintendent/K-12 Principal
Good Evening, As you may have heard the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services have moved 9th-12th grade to remote instruction beginning Wednesday, November 18th for a period of 3 weeks(high school should report tomorrow and Tuesday as scheduled). At this time MDHHS is recommending that K-8 instruction remain in person. The local superintendents are planning a meeting with the Health Department tomorrow (we usually meet weekly on Tuesday). Also our School Board has our regularly scheduled meeting tomorrow night. Obviously this is a rapidly changing situation. I will do my best to keep you updated as often as possible. I appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this latest order from the state. Sincerely, Bill Valima

Dear SC Community, Effective immediately all meals at Superior Central will be free to all students! This was announced by the United States Department of Agriculture today. It is important that families still fill out their free and reduced lunch applications and return them to school as soon as possible as the Michigan Department of Education told us today that the free meals will only last until December 31, 2020 or until all of the funds for this program are exhausted. Once this programs ends we will go back to charging normal meal fees. Have a great night!

We look forward to seeing all of you!
Dear Superior Central Parents and Guardians, As you have probably heard, the Governor’s Office, along with the COVID-19 Task Force on Education and the Return to School Advisory Committee, has released the MI Safe Schools: Michigan’s 2020-21 Return to School Roadmap. This Roadmap provides and strongly recommends safety protocols to keep school communities safe based on the status of the Coronavirus. The Roadmap also provides recommendations for mental and social-emotional health, instruction, and operations within each phase of the Michigan Safe Start Plan. Depending on the status of the MI Safe Schools, there are three scenarios for schools opening back up in the fall. 1. Phase 6 – Schools open for in-person instruction with minimal required safety protocols. 2. Phase 5 – Schools open for in-person instruction with moderate required safety protocols. 3. Phase 4 – Schools open for in-person instruction with stringent required safety protocols. 4. Phases 1-3 – Schools do not open for in-person instruction and instruction is provided remotely. So that we can make a return to school plan that is safe and appropriate for our district, the administration and the Superior Central School Board kindly ask that you complete our “Return to School – Parent Survey”. The survey will close at 11:59 on Sunday, July 26th. Thank you, Bill Valima https://forms.gle/SuSQoxfVphLqeN4g6
Hey SC Families! We realize that some of you were unable to return your school materials last week. Textbooks are expensive (ranging from $75 to over $100) and we'd really like to get them back. If you have some would you please return them to the school? We've put out our book return in front of the high school doors. Please drop your books in at any time. Chromebooks are also expensive. If you have not returned your chromebook please DO NOT drop it in the book return. Instead, email me @ email@example.com to arrange a drop off. Thanks.
Reminder: When returning chromebooks and other supplies tonight, please do not leave your vehicle. This is a drive-thru event, please do not park. Thanks for your understanding as we try to make this a quick process for all families.

Yesterday the Governor signed EO 2020-48 suspending the monthly meeting requirement for local school boards until May 12, 2020. With that, we will be cancelling our board meeting scheduled for Monday, April 20th. Our next scheduled meeting is for Monday, May 18th. Stay Healthy!
UPDATE ON SAKYLLY'S EGGS! Sakylly's eggs were delivered to the school the day that the Governor issued the "Stay Safe, Stay Home" order. This meant that we did not have time to sort the eggs by teacher, or personalize them. Initially, I thought it would be best to wait out the "lockdown" and get eggs out when we went back to school. Now that Easter is a week away, there has been an increased demand for eggs. If you absolutely need your eggs, Superior Central orders will be available for pick up in the Elementary lot on Thursday, April 9th from noon until 1:00. Please stay in your car, your eggs will be brought to you. In order to fulfill your order, please email Bill Valima at firstname.lastname@example.org by 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 7th. For your order to be processed, you MUST INCLUDE the student/family your purchased your egg from. Please understand that eggs will not have personalized frosted names on them. Parents, if you are picking up your entire order, please let me know. If you can wait until the Governor's "Stay Safe, Stay Home" order is lifted, your eggs will still be available for you. If you would like a refund for your eggs please email me at the above email. Thanks for your patience. Bill Valima

I sure am tired of the constant carousel of basketball game rescheduling this winter. Due to a oversight on our part regarding MHSAA policy, we will be rescheduling both the girls' and boys' games tomorrow night (February 12th). The MHSAA says that only 3 basketball games can be played in a week. When rescheduling we added a boys' and girls' game tomorrow night. This gave both a 4th game this week. As a district we apologize for this. The boys will play at Stephenson on Saturday, February 23rd at 12:30. The girls will host Bark River at 6:00 on Wednesday, February 27th. I'm really hoping this will be an end to the rescheduling for the year. Again, I apologize for all of this confusion.
