Dear Superior Central Students and Parents,
As you may know, the staff at Superior Central was offered the COVID-19 vaccination at Munising Memorial last Friday. About 80% of the staff received the vaccine. The second dose needs to be administered 28 days after the first dose. Because of the time sensitivity, the second dose is being administered on Friday, February 12th. To accommodate the large number of staff receiving a second dose, we will be conducting a half-day on Friday, February 12th. School will dismiss at 12:30 on Friday, February 12th.
Sincerely,
Bill Valima
Superintendent/K-12 Principal

Good Evening Cougars,
Just a reminder that tomorrow (Friday, January 15th) will be a 12:30 dismissal for all students.

Good Evening Cougars,
I hope you all had an enjoyable break. For the first time since November 18th all K-12 students will be able to attend in person at SC tomorrow! See you in the morning!
Mr. Valima

Good Afternoon Superior Central Families,
Today the MDHHS announced that our high school will be able to return to in person instruction on Monday, January 4th with the rest of our student body.
At this time Winter Sports can begin when this Order expires on January 15th. As more information comes out I will let you know.
I hope that you all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Please take this time to enjoy your family.
Bill Valima

Good Afternoon,
After completing our contract tracing this morning and consulting with the Health Department we have determined that it is in our best interest to remain open beginning tomorrow, Thursday, November 19 and only quarantine the 2nd and 4th grades. 4th grade will return to school on Monday, November 30th. The 2nd grade will return on Tuesday, December 1st.
All students who are considered close contacts will be receiving a phone call from the school and then can expect a follow-up call from the Health Department. 2nd and 4th grade parents can pick up chromebooks and other material between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 19th. Please ring the bell at the elementary door and give us your information and your materials will be delivered to you.
We appreciate your patients and understanding during this time. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out.
Sincerely,
Bill Valima
Superintendent/K-12 Principal

Good Evening Superior Central Community,
We were informed tonight of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis in the elementary school. After discussion with the LMAS Health Department, we have made the decision to close school on Wednesday, November 17th for all Kindergarten through 8th grade students to conduct contact tracing (9th through 12th grade is already closed per the MDHHS order). Once we have completed our contract tracing, we will make a decision regarding reopening on Thursday. I thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this.
Sincerely,
Bill Valima
Superintendent/K-12 Principal

Good Evening,
As you may have heard the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services have moved 9th-12th grade to remote instruction beginning Wednesday, November 18th for a period of 3 weeks(high school should report tomorrow and Tuesday as scheduled). At this time MDHHS is recommending that K-8 instruction remain in person. The local superintendents are planning a meeting with the Health Department tomorrow (we usually meet weekly on Tuesday). Also our School Board has our regularly scheduled meeting tomorrow night. Obviously this is a rapidly changing situation. I will do my best to keep you updated as often as possible. I appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this latest order from the state.
Sincerely,
Bill Valima

Good Afternoon Superior Central!
After much thought and discussion we have made the decision to not host in person parent-teacher conferences on Thursday. All conferences will be conducted over the phone at the same time that they were scheduled for in person. If you would prefer to do a Zoom conference please reach out to your child's teacher to receive a Zoom link for the scheduled time. We appreciate you understanding our concern for the safety of our staff and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Sincerely,
Bill Valima

Dear SC Community,
Effective immediately all meals at Superior Central will be free to all students! This was announced by the United States Department of Agriculture today. It is important that families still fill out their free and reduced lunch applications and return them to school as soon as possible as the Michigan Department of Education told us today that the free meals will only last until December 31, 2020 or until all of the funds for this program are exhausted. Once this programs ends we will go back to charging normal meal fees. Have a great night!

Staff will be assisting students to where they need to go. Middle and High school students will be reporting to the high school gym upon arrival. We will be making any necessary scheduling adjustments during the day. The first couple of days may be a little hectic without having an open house, so please be patient as we work out the kinks. We look forward to seeing all of you!

Dear Superior Central Parents and Guardians,
As you have probably heard, the Governor’s Office, along with the COVID-19 Task Force on Education and the Return to School Advisory Committee, has released the MI Safe Schools: Michigan’s 2020-21 Return to School Roadmap. This Roadmap provides and strongly recommends safety protocols to keep school communities safe based on the status of the Coronavirus. The Roadmap also provides recommendations for mental and social-emotional health, instruction, and operations within each phase of the Michigan Safe Start Plan. Depending on the status of the MI Safe Schools, there are three scenarios for schools opening back up in the fall.
1. Phase 6 – Schools open for in-person instruction with minimal required safety protocols.
2. Phase 5 – Schools open for in-person instruction with moderate required safety protocols.
3. Phase 4 – Schools open for in-person instruction with stringent required safety protocols.
4. Phases 1-3 – Schools do not open for in-person instruction and instruction is provided remotely.
So that we can make a return to school plan that is safe and appropriate for our district, the administration and the Superior Central School Board kindly ask that you complete our “Return to School – Parent Survey”. The survey will close at 11:59 on Sunday, July 26th.
Thank you,
Bill Valima

Hey SC Families! We realize that some of you were unable to return your school materials last week. Textbooks are expensive (ranging from $75 to over $100) and we'd really like to get them back. If you have some would you please return them to the school? We've put out our book return in front of the high school doors. Please drop your books in at any time. Chromebooks are also expensive. If you have not returned your chromebook please DO NOT drop it in the book return. Instead, email me @ bvalima@superiorcentralschools.org to arrange a drop off. Thanks.

Reminder: When returning chromebooks and other supplies tonight, please do not leave your vehicle. This is a drive-thru event, please do not park. Thanks for your understanding as we try to make this a quick process for all families.

Reminder: TOMORROW, June 17th 6:00-8:00 pm
Chromebook/textbook/library book RETURN. Locker/desk items, yearbooks, and Sayklly's egg pickup.
6th-12th grade - High School parking lot
K-5th grade - Elementary parking lot

Yesterday the Governor signed EO 2020-48 suspending the monthly meeting requirement for local school boards until May 12, 2020. With that, we will be cancelling our board meeting scheduled for Monday, April 20th. Our next scheduled meeting is for Monday, May 18th. Stay Healthy!

UPDATE ON SAKYLLY'S EGGS!
Sakylly's eggs were delivered to the school the day that the Governor issued the "Stay Safe, Stay Home" order. This meant that we did not have time to sort the eggs by teacher, or personalize them. Initially, I thought it would be best to wait out the "lockdown" and get eggs out when we went back to school. Now that Easter is a week away, there has been an increased demand for eggs. If you absolutely need your eggs, Superior Central orders will be available for pick up in the Elementary lot on Thursday, April 9th from noon until 1:00. Please stay in your car, your eggs will be brought to you. In order to fulfill your order, please email Bill Valima at bvalima@superiorcentralschools.org by 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 7th. For your order to be processed, you MUST INCLUDE the student/family your purchased your egg from. Please understand that eggs will not have personalized frosted names on them. Parents, if you are picking up your entire order, please let me know. If you can wait until the Governor's "Stay Safe, Stay Home" order is lifted, your eggs will still be available for you. If you would like a refund for your eggs please email me at the above email. Thanks for your patience. Bill Valima

I sure am tired of the constant carousel of basketball game rescheduling this winter. Due to a oversight on our part regarding MHSAA policy, we will be rescheduling both the girls' and boys' games tomorrow night (February 12th). The MHSAA says that only 3 basketball games can be played in a week. When rescheduling we added a boys' and girls' game tomorrow night. This gave both a 4th game this week. As a district we apologize for this. The boys will play at Stephenson on Saturday, February 23rd at 12:30. The girls will host Bark River at 6:00 on Wednesday, February 27th. I'm really hoping this will be an end to the rescheduling for the year. Again, I apologize for all of this confusion.
